Join Oaxacan alebrije artist Carlos Orozco for this special Dia de Muertos alebrije painting class! The alebrije calaveras (skulls) you will paint were carved from copal wood especially for this class by the artists of the Puech Ikots artists collective in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Carlos directs the indigenous artists' collective Puech Ikots (www.puechikots.com) in Oaxaca, Mexico and is a skilled wood carver and painter who works in the tradition of alebrijes. Alebrijes are the colorful carved wooden animals that are well-known in Mexican folk art.

In this class, Carlos will talk about Dia de Muertos traditions in Oaxaca, and speak to his own experiences of Dia de Muertos as an indigenous Oaxacan. He will also teach the history and significance of the alebrije in Oaxacan culture, and will explain the process of creating alebrijes. In addition he'll discuss the Puech Ikots fair trade artists' collective and its mission to provide a path to economic autonomy for indigenous artists in the Oaxacan sierra. All participants will receive their own pre-carved, approximately 3-3.5 inch tall unpainted alebrije skull (calavera) to paint, brought to Chicago directly from Oaxaca by Carlos especially for this class.

All skull alebrijes for this class were individually hand-carved from tropical copal wood by the members of the Puech Ikots collective especially for this event. With Carlos's one-on-one guidance you will create a unique Dia de Muertos skull alebrije in your own personal style to take home!

All paint and necessary materials will be provided. Spaces are limited; one person per alebrije (sorry, no shared registrations).

This event is BYOB so please feel free to bring a beverage to enjoy. Our wonderful host space, La Catrina Cafe, will have food available for purchase.

Puech Ikots is fiscally sponsored in the USA by Cuentos Foundation.
