Open Call - object / item / material / me

object / item / material / me

object / item / material / me examines the lifecycle of objects and how artists use their practice to explore the history, meaning, and weight of such items. How can an inanimate object reflect representation? How does an object come to embed identity? What is the political act of artists using certain materials and when does appropriation enter the dialogue? Through an art historical lens, critical conversation, and studio visits the exhibition looks at artists working to give agency to objects, items, materials, and themselves.

Graham Feyl is the summer curatorial resident at The Overlook. This curatorial project will be an accumulation of research, interviews, and studio visits with selected artists. The project will have a digital life from May to August, and will materialize in a group exhibition in the fall. The Overlook is a liminal art space that provides emerging women, queer, and artists of color a platform to further their practice and audience through residencies, programming, and special projects. Graham Feyl is a curator and art historian interested in queer identity, embodiment, and performance. He is a recent graduate of UIC in Art History and is attending SAIC for a MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History.

This call is open to artists/humans working in diverse mediums, not just visual based works.
