Project Description

Chicago Public Art Group and Grove Parc Venture Partners, LLC are seeking

community-driven artists to create a sculptural piece located at 61st and Cottage Grove

in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago. A committee of individuals representing the

partner groups will manage a community process that convenes neighborhood

stakeholders to explore, address, and develop themes and content with the chosen

artist. The stakeholders, community and local residents will be given the opportunity to

view the final design proposals and provide feedback.

The artist working with CPAG will implement the main stakeholder approved

proposal. CPAG will also manage opportunities for local residents and interested

community members to volunteer during the fabrication. By intersecting these

various components, the goals of this project seek to deepen engagement between

the local artist, community members, cultural institutions, community organizations,

and stakeholders on the mid-South Side of Chicago.

The Woodlawn community is experiencing a resurgence. The community boasts

easy access to large parks, the lakefront, Museum of Science and Industry, and the

University of Chicago campus. Jackson Park will be home to the forthcoming Obama

Presidential Center, which is expected to create $220 million in annual economic

impact and attract over 800,000 visitors each year.

The Jewel/Osco will be the first full service grocery store in Woodlawn in over 40

years. The sculpture will reflect the community and give visitors a unique perspective

of the community through art.
